Welcome to the third annual 45th Parallel Contest!  Together, let’s explore spiritual parallels in everyday sights. I invite you to enter the contest March 1-31, 2016 and compete for one of three prizes:

First Place:                $30
Second Place:           $25
Third Place:              $20

Winners will get a 45th Parallel Award Certificate.

Q.   Why’s it called the 45th Parallel Contest, anyway?
A.  My home in Portland, Oregon, lies on the 45th parallel, halfway between the North Pole and the equator. But you don’t have to live on this latitude to find adventure! When we ask the Holy Spirit if we can see the world with His eyes of fresh wonder, the supernatural world opens up to us in tangible ways. Join me as we look for God-encounters in the everyday and describe their spiritual parallels.

Q. What does an entry look like?
A.   Take a picture and describe the spiritual parallel it demonstrates. Tell how the photo illustrates overcoming, forgiving, encouraging, or our relationship with God. Email the submission to lynnrhare@gmail.com.

Q.   Can I see a few examples?
A.   Sure. Check out last year’s winners:

1st Place:     Lynette Roth   Interruptions
2nd Place:  Bethany Hayes   Lessons From a One-Legged Sandpiper
3rd Place:   Linda Jo Reed   Upheld in Reflected Glory

Q.  How many words should the contest entry contain?
A.  The word count for the text should be between 150 and 350 words.

Q.  What’s the deadline?
A.
Entries must be received March 1 – March 31, 2016.

Q.  How do I format my submission?
A.   Submit the contest entry as a 1-page Word document attached to an email. Put the photo at the top, the title of your entry below, and the text beneath. Use single-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font. Submit your photo as a separate attachment to the email. There will be 2 copies of the picture; one at the top of the page, and one attached to the email. Call the subject line of the email “2016 45th Parallel Contest Entry [Your Title]”.  Here’s an example.

 Q.  Will my submission appear as a blog post?
 A.  Selected entries will appear as blog posts. By submitting a contest entry, you give permission for it to appear on my website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.  If used, links to your website and social media will be included.

Q.   Do I need to follow your blog to enter?
A.   No, but it helps. See the scoring guide below.

Q.  How will entries be scored?
A.   Points are assigned as follows:

  • Up to 3 points for the photo (Choice of subject; clarity; composition)
  • Up to 3 points for the spiritual parallel (Inspiring; connected to Scripture; aha! factor)
  • Up to 3 points for description (Clear; creative)
  • 1 point given to entries of contestants who subscribe to the blog

Q.   Can I submit more than one entry?
A.   Yes. You may submit up to 3 entries, but each contestant is eligible to win only one prize.

Q.  Are there other ways to participate?
 A.  Yes.  Judges are needed for the contest.  Email me if you’d like to serve as a  judge.

Q.  How will I know if I win?
A.  Winners will be contacted via email by April 10, 2016. Winners will be announced via blog post the second week of April.
