“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place…” (Ephesians 6:14)
Would you wear a bullet-proof vest if it had an 80-90% efficiency rating?
In June 2005, Second Chance, the largest supplier of U.S. bullet-proof vests, recalled 100,000 vests made with Zylon. Research showed that the material lost 10-20% of its durability within two years of manufacture. Police and security guards across the nation were immediately notified.
In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul tells us to put on the armor of God. The first two pieces of that armor are a belt of truth and a breastplate of righteousness. The words righteous and righteousness are used more than 500 times in the Bible. Righteousness means conformity to God’s standards of right and wrong; it’s equal to just. God’s morals – like His truths – are absolutes. But while man-made vests decay over time, divine breastplates remain solid and protect our hearts for good.
We are best prepared for battles with the enemy when we appropriate our God-given authority over him, declaring power in the blood of the Lamb. “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor. 5:21) We are the righteous of God in Christ; we don’t do righteousness. Performance cannot change our stance. Our redemption is found in Jesus alone.
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Jesus, in Matt. 6:33) When we put the Kingdom first, asking for God’s desire, we will find it with certainty, because we stand righteous before a Holy God. And since Christ is in us, even while our bodies are dead because of sin, our spirits are thriving in righteousness (Rom 8:10).
We can wear a breastplate of righteousness with absolute confidence.
Now that’s a bullet-proof vest you can count on.
