“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children,
you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." (Jesus, in Matt. 18:3)
What is your earliest memory? When I was three, my mother Maryann and I searched for feathers on a playground in South Carolina. Each time I found one, I raced to bring it to her. As I held the newfound feathers out to my mom, she collected them in her palm and beamed. It was a special time of bonding that we remember today with fondness.
In my preschool days, as my mom showed me how to tie my red Keds, the shoelace came to life, a snake winding his way around a tall tree and sliding through a hole in the ground. Over and over I worked at it, ecstatic when I finally reproduced my mother's magic motions. Finally I could put on my own shoes and run out to play!
Inside of all of us is a wonder kid, no matter how old we are.
As kids, we just knew. No one needed to teach us how to linger in the moment. When problems came up, we were ready to erase them all with the innocence of a buoyant, resilient forgiveness. And those early years bore the candor of an inner faith that was so trusting, it didn't need to know what came next.
No wonder we must convert to being like little children, as Jesus said. I think He's asking you today, "Want to come out and play?"
